What is the MUMENTOUS Cultural Heritage Exhibit?

The MUMENTOUS Cultural Heritage Exhibit is part of the Texas Lakes Trail Region’s traveling exhibit program. The subject matter of MUMENTOUS focuses on the custom of wearing homecoming mums (short for chrysanthemum), which was born in the 1910s alongside the dawn of football programs at universities across the country. Only in Texas, however, did the practice catch fire at the high school level and evolve into today’s elaborate, super-sized silk versions of their predecessors. Just like the mums themselves, the cultural, social, and economic impact of this Texas high school homecoming tradition is enormous. The real plot twist is that women—not students—across the Lone Star State are the real drivers of this multi-million-dollar industry.

The 40-panel MUMENTOUS Cultural Heritage Exhibit is based on MUMENTOUS, the non-fiction book by Amy J. Schultz. The original photographs in the book and exhibit were originally exhibited at the Arlington Museum of Art in Arlington, TX during Amy’s tenure as the AMA’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence. Additional photographs in the exhibit are shared in partnership with the University of Texas at Arlington Libraries Special Collections. Contact the Lakes Trail for information about hosting the exhibit: info@texaslakestrail.com

What is the Texas Lakes Trail Region?

The Texas Lakes Trail is a 31-county region in North Central Texas. Although it’s anchored by the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country, the Lakes Trail region is as rich in Texas culture and rural destinations as it is “big city” lifestyle and attractions.

The Texas Historical Commission established the Texas Lakes Trail and nine other regions to help visitors discover the incredibly rich heritage and history across the state. In the Lakes Trail, many of the roadways follow historic trails and early highways such as the Bankhead Highway, Chisholm Trail, Butterfield Trail, Shawnee Trail, and the Great Western Trail.
